Open University
Chemistry Society

Well, it looks as if the ChemSoc is, if not dead, lying on the floor twitching its legs. It's been over a year since I've heard anything that makes me think that it might be a viable entity. So I'll be removing some of the stuff from this website in the near future.

If there are any OU chemistry students reading this who think that they can revive the society then I'd suggest that getting together on the FirstClass conference would be a good idea.

However, please bear in mind that running a society requires a commitment to actually do something. You'll need a Chairperson (fairly easy job - maybe a couple of hours a month), a Secretary (about 6 hours a month), a Treasurer (also 6 hours a month - but a lot of responsibility), a Membership Secretary (about 12 hours a month) and somebody to do the newsletter (15 hours a month - most of it nagging people to contribute then having to write most of it yourself).

Unless you can find a group of people willing to committ that sort of effort then it's probably not worth trying.

What really isn't needed are people full of great ideas for somebody else to do. The world is full of people like this - and they're about as useful as a fishnet condom.

The Open University Chemistry Society is run by students, both past and present. We organize several visits throughout the year, a revision weekend at York and revision days held in Essex, Bristol and Glasgow. A full list of all our planned events for the year can be found below in the diary.

TouchPaper

The ChemSoc newsletter, Touchpaper, is sent to all OU chemistry students at the start of the Year. Subsequent newsletters are sent to members every few months. The last few issues are available below. They are in Adobe Acrobat format, so you'll need version 5 of the Acrobat Reader which can be downloaded here...Get Acrobat Reader
